John Powell Allen, 1849, and May Myers Allen, 1860
John Powell Allen was born in Lorain County, Ohio, December
21, 1849. He married May Myers on May 28, 1881 in Defiance, Ohio, where
she was
from. John worked as a millwright in steel mills most of his
adult life. In 1900, the family was living in Ullin, Pulaski, Illinois.
His occupation was
stated as mechanic. There were eleven household members in a
rented house, including son Leroy, 18, son Roland, 15, son William, 13,
son Harry, 10,
daughter Nellie, 4, and daughter Inez, 2. There were also
three male boarders who were mill workers, presumably at the same mill
that John worked in.
In 1910 the family was living in Fostoria, Hancock County,
Ohio, in a house at 231 Adams Street. John died in 1923 in Fostoria. The
newspaper obituary
said he was working as a millwright for a large manufacturing
company in Michigan, but that he was home in Fostoria ill with the flu.
May died in 1939,
also in Fostoria. John and May are buried in Fountain
Cemetery in Fostoria.
